A Century of Inspiring Women'There has been significant economic and social change since 1915. Women have been granted the vote, British women have climbed Everest for the first time and the country has elected it's first female Prime Minister. The Women's Institute has been a constant throughout, gathering women together, encouraging them to acquire new skills and nurturing unique talents.'
Her Majesty The Queen, 4th June 2015 Formed in 1915, the Women's Institute was originally brought to life to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation's aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK. After immigrating from Canada, WI member Madge Watt saw the value of setting up Women's Institutes in Britain, with the help of governmental funding, Madge was able to set up the first WI on 25 September 1915.
